La città
Castelsardo è un borgo medievale situato nella Sardegna del Nord, sul Golfo dell’Asinara, conservato praticamente intatto grazie alla sua particolare posizione geografica, un promontorio a ridosso del mare, che lo ha preservato da attacchi e distruzioni nel corso dei secoli. Fondata dalla famiglia genovese dei doria col nome di Castelgenovese, venne poi conquistata dagli aragonesi e ribattezzata Castellaragonese. L'odierno nome Castelsardo risale alla metà del XVIII secolo, quando sostituì quello spagnolo. Castelsardo oggi è una cittadina turistica attrezzata, con un porto turistico e bellissime spiagge e calette ideali per gradevoli soggiorni estivi. Durante l’anno riti e tradizioni, come la famosa Festa di Lunissanti, scandiscono la vita di tutti i giorni, caratterizzata dal lavoro operoso di cestinaie, pescatori e agricoltori.
The town
Castelsardo fa parte del territorio dell’Anglona nella provincia di Sassari, in una posizione molto particolare a strapiombo sul mare e dominante il paesaggio dell’entroterra, prevalentemente collinare. Vi sono scorci di notevole bellezza che si caratterizzano per le rocce calcaree che formano altipiani e tavolati, scavati da fenomeni di erosione che formano valloni o strapiombi. La vegetazione prevalente è quella tipica della macchia mediterranea, che si è sviluppata anche nell’entroterra e non solo sulle coste, mentre i boschi si estendono per non più di poche decine di ettari. In molti di questi versanti i corsi d'acqua, di cui il principale è il fiume Coghinas, scavano vallate molto profonde dove non è rara la formazione di grotte di medie dimensioni. Nelle zone dell’entroterra si incontrano greggi di pecore o mucche al pascolo, ciò che più caratterizza il paesaggio sardo.
Il territorio
Castelsardo is a medieval village located in northern Sardinia, on the Gulf of Asinara. It is preserved almost intact thanks to its particular geographical position, a promontory close to the sea, which has protected it from attacks and destruction over the centuries. Founded by the Doria family from Genoa with the name of Castelgenovese, it was then conquered by the Aragonese and renamed Castellaragonese. Today's name Castelsardo dates back to the mid-eighteenth century, when it replaced the Spanish one. Castelsardo today is a tourist town equipped with a marina and beautiful beaches and little bays ideal for pleasant summer holidays. During the year, rituals and traditions, such as the famous Festa di Lunissanti, mark everyday life, characterised by the industrious work of basket makers, fishermen and farmers.
The Surroundings
Castelsardo is part of the territory of Anglona in the province of Sassari, in a very particular position overlooking the sea and dominating the hinterland landscape, mainly hilly. There are glimpses of notable beauty that are characterized by the limestone rocks that form plateaus and planks, dug by erosion phenomena that form valleys or overhangs. The prevailing vegetation is typical of the Mediterranean maquis, which has also developed in the hinterland and not only on the coasts, while the woods extend for no more than a few tens of hectares. In many of these sides the rivers, of which the main one is the river Coghinas, dig deep valleys where the formation of medium-sized caves is not rare. In the inland areas there are flocks of sheep or grazing cows, what most characterises the Sardinian landscape.
